Here are the answers to some of your questions, and a few extra thoughts.

  • What is “yoga?” – Yoga is not a religion. It is a philosophy, a lifestyle and a way of life. The word yoga, comes from the Sanskrit word yuj which means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted as "union" or a method of discipline. It is a spiritual and physical experience to encourage health, well-being, and balance. In the modern world, most people practice Asana (yoga postures), which is a set or sequence of physical poses that purify the body, increase physical strength, bring focus and awareness to the breath, and incorporates the act of meditation.
  • Why do we Om? –- Om is a mantra, or vibration, that is traditionally chanted at the beginning and end of yoga sessions. It is said to be the sound of the universe. Somehow the ancient yogis knew what scientists today are telling us–that the entire universe is moving. Nothing is ever solid or still. Everything that exists pulsates, creating a rhythmic vibration that the ancient yogis acknowledged with the sound of Om. Chanting Om allows us to recognize our experience as a reflection of how the whole universe moves–the setting sun, the rising moon, the ebb and flow of the tides, the beating of our hearts.
  • What to wear? –- Comfortable fitting clothes that you would normally workout in are great. If you sweat…maybe lighten the clothing load.
  • Should I eat? – Give yourself at least 2 hours between eating and taking class.
  • What should I bring? –- We have mats, blankets and blocks. However, as you continue your practice a personal mat is recommended.
  •  Come Clean – “Purity of body is essential to well being” (BKS Iyengar). Refrain from using heavy perfumes before class. Keeping the air clean and pure is essential.
  •  Running late/leaving early – Okay...things happen and you can’t always get there early, but…Please be sensitive to those practicing around you by moving quietly. If entering class late, wait until the instructor gives you the okay and helps you find a spot. Also, make sure you tell the instructor you have to leave early.
